Amber Heard at the 71st Golden Globe Awards

Amber Heard turned heads at Sunday’s 71st annual Golden Globe Awards. The breathtaking actress, a presenter at the awards ceremony, teamed her midnight blue Atelier Versace dress with a romantic up-do and alluring makeup by Hourglass. “Amber brought some of her own ideas to the mix,” says makeup artist Matthew VanLeeuwen. “She liked the idea of focusing on sultry chocolate eyes, creamy skin and soft nude lips. I was just bringing out the remarkable geometry and beauty of her face.

Here’s how to recreate the look:

COMPLEXION: Prime with Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum, conceal with Hidden® Corrective Concealer in Warm, and follow with Veil Fluid Makeup in Light Beige. “No. 28 hydrates beautifully but it also creates a magical finish,” he says.

BROWS: Define the brows with Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette.

EYES: Apply the shell shade from the Vol. 6 Eyeshadow Palette as a base color all over the lids. Follow with the bronze shimmer shade from Visionaire Eyeshadow Duo in Gypsy applied to the crease and under the eyes. Deepen the bronze with the brown shade from Vol. 6 Eyeshadow Palette applied to the outer corner, top and bottom of the lids. Line the eyes with a deep plum pencil. “I also smudged the line with the black shadow from the palette,” he says. Apply a high-shine pearl shadow to the inner corner of the eye. Apply a coat of Film Noir® Full Spectrum Mascara, allow to dry and curl lashes.

CHEEKS: Apply the sheer rose shade from Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset to the cheeks, and highlight with the sheer champagne shade from Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light. Retrace your steps with Ambient® Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light, an opalescent sheer powder which mimics a moonlit glow.

LIPS: Line lips with Trace Lip Liner in Bare and follow with Femme Rouge® Velvet Crème Lipstick in Whisper, a golden pinky beige shimmer. “The look is glamorous but restrained,” adds VanLeeuwen. “She is so extraordinarily beautiful.”

Kerry Washington at the Emmys

All eyes were on Kerry Washington at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards. The Scandal star, who wore makeup by Hourglass, showcased an ethereal look as pretty as her blush-colored Marchesa gown. “The inspiration came from the delicate dress,” says makeup artist Carola Gonzalez, who combined velvety matte skin, soft plum lids and luminous cheeks for a look that was as pretty as the floral embroideries on Washington’s gown. “Although I like a matte finish, especially for awards shows, I added a radiance to her skin with Hourglass Ambient® Lighting Powder in Radiant Light. It’s the perfect shade for Kerry.”

Hourglass At New York Fashion Week

Hourglass collaborated with Christian Siriano for his spring 2014 runway show in New York. Siriano was inspired by a recent trip to Isla Mujeres on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, and the destination’s exuberant color palette. The new collection features vivid prints, woven raffias, and sculptural organzas all in vibrant hues. “I wanted the collection to be light, feminine and romantic,” says Siriano. “Like the girl left the beach but she had a cocktail party to go to, and threw on a dress, a bright lip, and little highlighter.”

To extend the sultry theme, makeup director Polly Osmond played up luminous skin, pale lids and coral lips. “It’s beachy, breezy and with a pop of color,” says Osmond. “I wanted to create a diffusion of texture, color and light. It’s how your skin would look at a tropical sunset. We used the new Hourglass Ambient® Lighting Palette to create a breathtaking glow—not just on the cheeks but on the eyes, too.” Osmond also demonstrated the multi-purpose nature of No. 28 Primer Serum. “We used it as a hydrating base, on the brows for definition, and as a final stroke on the cheeks to add a divine shine.”

SKIN: Prep skin with No. 28 Primer Serum, infused with botanical oils, and follow with Illusion® Hyaluronic Skin Tint for a luminous complexion. Conceal any dark circles or imperfections with Hidden® Corrective Concealer.

CHEEKS: To create a multi-dimensional glow, apply all three shades from the Ambient® Lighting Palette to the cheeks using a circular motion. Dab No. 28 Primer Serum onto the apples of the cheeks for a hint of tropical sheen.

EYES: Apply Incandescent Light from the Ambient® Lighting Palette all over the lids. Follow with the shimmering Shell shade from Vol. 6 Eyeshadow Palette, applied to the inner corner of eyes. Use the same shade to create a diffused liner along the top and bottom of the lash lines. Finish with a coat of Film Noir® Full Spectrum Mascara.

BROWS: Brush a small amount of No. 28 Primer Serum onto brows to create definition and a little shine.

LIPS: Prep lips earlier with No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil for superior hydration. Apply Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Muse, an orange coral shade, to the lips. Create a diffused pout by softening the outline of the lips with a lip brush.

Hourglass For Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano previewed his first resort collection in New York recently, and Hourglass makeup artist Oz Rodriguez created the accompanying makeup look. Inspired by abstract art, Siriano applied bold stripes of color to his effervescent daywear and even to some of his eveningwear. The beauty look played up flawless skin, polished brows and flushed cheeks. For the vivid lip color, Oz mixed three Hourglass products: Femme Rouge® Velvet Crème Lipstick in Ballet, Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Edition topped off with a lick of Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Icon. The resulting shade is a pink so electric it makes you think—of a tropical escape during the winter season. Exactly what the cruise collections call for.

Hourglass At New York Fashion Week

Hourglass created the makeup looks for the La Perla fall 2013 presentation in New York earlier this month. The collection, which featured lace, tulle and silk designs, was inspired by Spain, specifically the embellished livery of bullfighters. “I wanted to capture the sensuality and the strength of the woman wearing this decadent lingerie,” says makeup artist Moani Lee, who focused on elegant brows, radiant skin and dramatic lips worthy of an Almodóvar heroine.

For La Perla’s Black Label collection, which referenced mysterious themes including erotic art and surrealism, Lee switched the focus from the lips to the eyes. “The second look is a fresh take on the classic smoky eye, featuring a blend of black and brown kohl liner,” she says. “There are no harsh lines, it’s a softer interpretation that showcases beautiful, almond-shaped eyes.”

Lee has a mixmaster approach to makeup: To imbue skin with a multi-dimensional luminescence, she combined three different shades of Hourglass foundation, concealer, and finishing powder. As for the scene-stealing scarlet lip, she blended two shades of Hourglass Femme Rouge® Velvet Crème Lipstick. “It was one part Icon and three parts Raven,” she says. “The mixture of blue red and orange red makes for an opulent and regal fall statement.”

LOOK ONE: La Perla Collection

SKIN: Prep with No. 28 Primer Serum. Follow with Veil Fluid Makeup in three shades: Porcelain, Ivory and Honey. “I use the deepest shade to contour, the lightest shade to highlight and the matching shade for the rest of the skin,” says Lee. Repeat the process with Hidden® Corrective Concealer in three shades: Fair, Natural and Tan. Finish up with the Ambient® Lighting Powder in three shades: Radiant Light (golden beige), Dim Light (neutral beige) and Luminous Light (champagne pearl). “Blending the three powders creates an exceptional glow.”

EYES: Augment brows with the Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette. Next, line the eyes with Film Noir® Kohl Eye Pencil in Espresso, and apply the mauve shimmer shade from Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Exhibition to the lids. “To create a watery effect, I like to dampen my brush with a little No. 28 Primer Serum,” says Lee. “Unlike using water, the shadow never really dries down.” Finish with a few coats of Film Noir® Full Spectrum Mascara.

LIPS: Apply Femme Rouge® Velvet Crème Lipstick in Raven and Icon. “I melted the shades together and applied the new color with a lip brush,” says Lee. “Although vibrant, it’s not an especially sharp shape. It’s still fresh, delicate and elegant.”

LOOK TWO: La Perla Black Label

SKIN: Prep skin with No. 28 Primer Serum. Follow with Veil Fluid Makeup in three shades: Porcelain, Ivory and Honey. Repeat the process with Hidden® Corrective Concealer in three shades: Fair, Natural and Tan. Finish up with Ambient® Lighting Powder in three shades: Radiant Light (golden beige), Dim Light (neutral beige) and Luminous Light (champagne pearl).

EYES: Augment brows with Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette. Next, line the eyes with Film Noir® Kohl Eye Pencil in Eclipse (black) and smudge. Follow with Film Noir® Kohl Eye Pencil in Espresso (brown) and smudge. “Layering the two shades gives the eyes more depth and intrigue,” says Lee. Follow with the eggplant shimmer shade from Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Exhibition. Finish with a few coats of Film Noir® Full Spectrum Mascara.

LIPS: Apply Femme Rouge® Velvet Crème Lipstick in Grace. “This shade enhances your natural lip color,” says Lee. “The sensual flesh tone is as appropriate for everyday as it is for the La Perla runway.

Hourglass At The Golden Globes

One’s an English beauty and the other’s a Californian bombshell, but Emily Blunt and Jessica Alba had at least one thing in common at the 70th Golden Globe Awards—they both wore makeup by Hourglass.

2013 Golden Globes

In a gilded dress by Michael Kors, Blunt more than lived up to her reputation as a Hollywood golden girl. The actress, nominated for Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, “definitely had something in mind as far as the look,” says makeup artist Jenn Streicher. “Emily wanted smoky eyes paired with soft pink lips that echoed her Lorraine Schwartz ruby earrings.” Meanwhile, Alba, a presenter at the awards ceremony, was resplendent in a coral gown by Oscar de la Renta. “The dress was the inspiration for the look,” says makeup artist Lauren Andersen. “I loved the contrast between her glowing skin and the matte orange lip. It’s an almost tropical pop of color that’s not an exact match for the dress but close.” Here are all the details on their looks by Hourglass:

Create Your Perfect Light

On a crisp day in New York last month, a flock of leading beauty editors arrived at a midtown Manhattan loft. They were there for a first-look at Hourglass’s new Ambient® Lighting Powder, to be officially launched in spring. Ambient® Lighting is a collection of ground-breaking finishing powders that emulate different lighting effects, from pink light to candlelight. Hosted by Hourglass CEO & Founder Carisa Janes, the launch event unfolded in a studio arrayed with artistic vignettes that evoked the six powders.

To bring the collection to life, we also tapped internationally renowned makeup artist, James Kaliardos, whose work has graced magazine covers from W to Vogue. An accomplished story-teller in his own work, James created numerous looks on models using the cutting-edge new powders. “I learned about makeup through the great photography masters—Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein, and Mario Testino,” said James. “And light has always been the most important element to their work. It’s also what makes foundation and skin look wonderful or dull, defining or mask-like.”

After the presentation, the editors had the opportunity to get touch-ups with the powders. The verdict? “This is going to be huge,” said one. Stay tuned for the February unveiling.
