How To #AmbientStrobe

Create Your Perfect Highlight with Ambient® Strobe Lighting Powder

Strobing is the technique of bringing facial features forward and sculpting with light to create depth and dimension for a refined, natural highlight.

Ambient® Strobe Lighting Powders are best applied with the Ambient® Strobe Lighting Sculptor – they can be used wet or dry to achieve varying levels of intensity, taking you for day to night.

1. To broaden a narrow forehead, gently dab the angled side of the Sculptor to the middle of the forehead.

2. To give height to the nose, sweep the tip of the Sculptor down the bridge of the nose. Add more to the tip of the nose for a lifted effect.

3. To accentuate the cheekbones and lift the brows, sweep the angled side of the Sculptor along the tops of the cheekbones, up towards the top of the brow in a “crescent moon” shape.

4. To open up the eye area, dab the tip of the Sculptor under the brow bone and in the inner corners of the eyes.

5. To create the look of fuller lips, dab the tip of the Sculptor on the Cupid’s bow.

6. Use the flocked side of the Sculptor to blend and diffuse any harsh edges. Powder can be layered, gradually building up to your desired intensity.

Create Your Perfect Light

On a crisp day in New York last month, a flock of leading beauty editors arrived at a midtown Manhattan loft. They were there for a first-look at Hourglass’s new Ambient® Lighting Powder, to be officially launched in spring. Ambient® Lighting is a collection of ground-breaking finishing powders that emulate different lighting effects, from pink light to candlelight. Hosted by Hourglass CEO & Founder Carisa Janes, the launch event unfolded in a studio arrayed with artistic vignettes that evoked the six powders.

To bring the collection to life, we also tapped internationally renowned makeup artist, James Kaliardos, whose work has graced magazine covers from W to Vogue. An accomplished story-teller in his own work, James created numerous looks on models using the cutting-edge new powders. “I learned about makeup through the great photography masters—Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein, and Mario Testino,” said James. “And light has always been the most important element to their work. It’s also what makes foundation and skin look wonderful or dull, defining or mask-like.”

After the presentation, the editors had the opportunity to get touch-ups with the powders. The verdict? “This is going to be huge,” said one. Stay tuned for the February unveiling.
